Trenston vs Excel and Google Sheets

How Trenston differs from Excel and Google Sheets, described in each maker's own words, plus when a spreadsheet is the better choice for running a company.

What spreadsheets says it is

"Microsoft Excel is the industry leading spreadsheet application and data analysis tool." Microsoft Excel, microsoft.com, Excel product page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/excel

Side by side

This page describes each product using its maker's own public wording, quoted and linked below. It does not rate either product, and says nothing about price. Trenston's own statements describe features that are live today.

What it is for. Excel and Google Sheets: Building spreadsheets and analyzing data, according to Microsoft and Google. Trenston: Running a company: seeing what changed, deciding, and handing work off.

What you work with. Excel and Google Sheets: Spreadsheets and data that you set up and structure yourself. Trenston: A Briefing and department pages already laid out, plus a built-in demo company to explore first.

A workspace for the founder or CEO: a Briefing of what changed, financials and runway, pipeline, tasks and department queues.

A Decision Center that ranks open decisions, drafts a recommendation with a confidence score, and waits for you to confirm.

Delegation: assign work to an owner in Tasks or a department, and they get an email.

Role-based access, so people see their own departments and financial data is limited to people granted Financials access.

Connections to QuickBooks, Xero, SAP Business One, HubSpot and Slack, rather than a replacement for them.

Not a spreadsheet, a report builder or a general document tool.

Not accounting software, a full ERP or a full CRM.

Not on autopilot. Suggestions are drafts until you confirm them.

Which to use

You do not have to choose. Keep your spreadsheets for modeling, and use Trenston as the place you look to see the company. Financials in Trenston accepts a CSV import.

When spreadsheets is the better choice: You want total flexibility to build your own model, layout or formulas. You are analyzing data one time, or doing detailed financial modeling. Your team already works in spreadsheets and the numbers are small enough to track there.

When Trenston may fit: You are tired of rebuilding the same company picture from several files. You want open decisions ranked and tracked in one place. You want work handed to an owner and followed up, not left in a cell comment.
